A Painting Conversation
At the moment I go to restaurants, the movies or the gym alone. I am not embarrassed by this, but if I’m dining out, I turn my phone on and pretend that I am talking to someone.

How do you do this?

Well, let’s say you are at your usual restaurant and the procedure has to look real since they already know you: You must press something on your phone and when the light goes on your screen (and the people at the restaurant can see it and believe that you are indeed engaged in conversation), you dial your own number.

21st Century Alchemy
James Cohan Gallery Shanghai is pleased to present the exhibition Alchemy & Inquiry with works by three prominent American artists, Philip Taaffe, Fred Tomaselli and Terry Winters. The exhibition was organized by independent curator Raymond Foye and Senior Curator Jennifer McGregor at the Wave Hill botanical garden and cultural center in New York City, where this exhibition first originated and was on view from April to June, 2011.

Nature and the natural world have long inspired artists in both Western and Eastern cultures. While each of the three artists in this exhibition have their own distinctive and innovative approach to their process and materials, they each share a common interest in producing works that become diverse, visually engaged responses to the ways in which they study nature and observe the changing landscape.

Rumors, Gossip, and Other Speech at F2 Gallery
F2 Gallery presents the solo exhibition entitled “Rumor” by multimedia contemporary Chinese artist Wu Junyong from September 3rd to November 7th, 2011. The exhibition will feature a dozen of the artist’s recent and new paintings, as well as works on paper. Opening Reception on Sat, September 3, from 3-6 pm.

Wu was greatly encouraged to practice art since his childhood years by his family members. When he grew up, he was greatly influenced by local folk arts, Cultural Revolution propaganda art and the Socialist Realism from the Soviet Union. The idea that art is to serve a political purpose is rooted in his way of thinking, and it is present in his works.

Nuanced Language: “Characters” at Chambers Fine Art
This exhibition brings together works by eight Chinese artists, which respond to the complexities of the Chinese written language. Whether exposed at an early age to the practice of calligraphy or simply conversant with its basic premises, none of the artists here, with the exception of Gu Wenda, work in the traditional medium of ink and brush on paper. Instead, we find calligraphy on silk and canvas supplemented with video (Yang Jiechang), burnt into xuan paper (Wang Tiande), executed by flashlight (Qiu Zhijie), reduced to one bit form and silkscreened on panel (Feng Mengbo), created from grape tendrils and photographed (Cui Fei) and finally painted in water on stone (Song Dong).

According to Zhao Zhao: New Works
Chambers Fine Art is pleased to present the opening of According to Zhao Zhao: New Works on September 10, 2011. After graduating from the Xinjiang Academy of Fine Arts in Urumqi, he moved to Beijing in 2004 and soon encountered Ai Weiwei, whom he has assisted in many capacities: starting with the video Beijing: Chang ’an Boulevard, and continuing until today.

During this crucial period, however, he also worked independently in a range of media that included video, photography, performance and object–making, gaining a semi-underground reputation as one of the most provocative artists of his generation. Unwilling to be pinned down to one medium or theme, he operates in many different locations that range from a gallery space in the Dashanzhi Art District (798) to East Tianshan Mountain, Xinjiang.

Zhang Dali: Chinese Offspring
According to the Zhang Dali, immigrant workers who have traveled from rural areas all over China to earn a living in construction sites in Chinese cities, are the most important members of the Chinese race: they are shaping our physical reality. Yet, they are the faceless crowd living at the bottom of the social world. To cast them in resin is a way to recognize their existence and contribution as well as to capture a fast-changing point of time in the Chinese society.

From 2003 to 2005, Zhang has portrayed 100 immigrant workers in life-size resin sculptures in various postures—with a designated number, the artist's signature, and the work's title Chinese Offspring tattooed onto each of their bodies. They are often hung upside down, indicating the uncertainty of their life and their powerlessness in changing their own fate.

Xu Bing, A Landscape of Shadows
Chinese artist Xu Bing, recipient of a MacArthur Foundation "genius" award in 1999, unveiled a fascinating new direction in his most recent works before a packed crowd here at the Asian Art Museum. The talk was co-presented by the Museum and Asia Society Northern California.

Perhaps best known for creating an entirely new lexicon of made-up Chinese characters, Xu has long been regarded as a master in manipulating meaning and language.
